Storytelling Workshop for Solo Storytellers

Storytelling Workshop for Solo Storytellers

6 Days ONLINE ZOOM Workshop for Actresses, Actors, Storytellers, Solo Performers, Directors, Playwrights with Mike Alfreds

Mike Alfreds is offering a workshop on storytelling based on his book Then What Happens? It will explore a range of techniques and skills for the individual performer to employ in telling stories, whether in a formal space like a theatre or one that is improvised, such as a park. It is essentially the storyteller working alone in an empty space without props or any form of technology. It will deal with language, logic, gesture, movement, mime, the use of space, levels of characterisation, points of view and the performer as a multifaceted storyteller, not only as an actor but also as a host, narrator, commentator, designer, stage hand, musician, editor…

Participants should also get a copy of Then What Happens? The work will focus on Part 2 of the book: Set 2, Workshops 6 – 8 for Individual Storytelling Skills; Pages167 – 232.

We will also use examples of texts from the rest of the book to explore some of the techniques. Participants should have a good knowledge of English. There will be quite a lot of English text used.

Then What Happens? By Mike Alfreds is published by Nick Hern Books and is available from Amazon and Kindle.

“If I was allowed to train again to be an actor, but I was only allowed one teacher, it would have to be Mike Alfreds. To me he is a genius when it comes to acting and storytelling. I will spend my life trying to be true to what he perceives possible in the theatre. He is a true pioneer.” – Mark Rylance
“Most of what I am as an actress I owe to Mike Alfreds. He gave me the language and the tools I needed for my craft” Pam  Ferris
“All theatre directors know that good narrative is the secret of good theatre, but few have as distinctive, rigorous and exceptional a method of exploring that secret as does Mike Alfreds. His system of working, and his thoughts on the making of theatre in our time, are as crucial and illuminating as those of Stanislavsky and Peter Brook have been to generations of theatre enthusiasts and practitioners.” – Michael Coveney
